Outback Queensland Couples Road Trip – Hot Springs & Cold Cocktails

Join us on an unforgettable Outback Queensland caravan road trip from Brisbane to Longreach and back via the coast. This couples getaway includes Charlotte Plains hot springs, Eromanga dinosaurs, a Thomson River sunset cruise, country pub stops and a Lady Musgrave Island reef tour — the perfect mix of red dirt adventure and coastal relaxation.

Outback Queensland Couples Road Trip

A 2,900km caravan adventure with great friends

Earlier this year, Rayni and I hit the road from Brisbane with two other couples for a true Outback Queensland escape. Three caravans, six great mates, plenty of laughs — and nearly 3,000km of wide-open highways, red dirt, artesian hot springs and reef-blue water.

Here’s how the adventure unfolded.

Day 1 – Brisbane to St George

Stay: Pelican Rest Tourist Park

Our convoy rolled out of Brisbane and headed southwest along the Carnarvon Highway. Pelican Rest Tourist Park in St George was the perfect first-night stop — spacious sites, relaxed atmosphere, and an easy walk into town.

It’s a great overnighter when towing, with level ground and plenty of room to manoeuvre caravans.

Days 2–3 – Cunnamulla

Stay: Charlotte Plains

Charlotte Plains is a bucket-list outback stay — and for good reason.

This working sheep station is famous for its artesian hot baths, naturally heated from the Great Artesian Basin. Each site has its own private bath, and soaking under a sky full of stars with good friends nearby was something special.

No light pollution. No traffic noise. Just crackling campfires, red dirt sunsets and complete stillness.

Days 4–5 – Eulo Region

Stay: Alroy Station

Alroy Station gave us a true station-stay experience. Big open skies, peaceful bush camping and classic outback hospitality.

This part of Queensland feels wonderfully remote. Sunsets turn the landscape deep orange, and the night sky is next-level spectacular.

Day 6 – Quilpie

Stay: The Lake, Quilpie

A relaxed one-night stop at The Lake — a quirky, welcoming campground with a social outback feel.

Quilpie itself is famous for boulder opal, and it’s worth a wander through town to see local opal displays and the unique opal altar at St Finbarr’s Church.

Eromanga – Where Dinosaurs Roamed

🦕 Eromanga Natural History Museum

A real highlight of the trip.

The museum houses some of Australia’s largest dinosaur fossils, including massive sauropods discovered locally. The guided tour takes you behind the scenes into the fossil preparation lab where you can watch palaeontologists at work.

Standing beside the enormous leg bones of these ancient giants really gives you perspective on how incredible Australia’s prehistoric past is.

Days 7–8 – Lara Wetlands

Stay: Lara Wetlands (Lara Station)

Lara Wetlands is a magical outback oasis — natural wetlands surrounded by red dirt plains.

Birdlife is abundant, walking tracks wind around the water, and the sunsets reflect beautifully across the wetlands. It’s peaceful, spacious and ideal for couples wanting a mix of nature and comfort while still free camping.

Evenings were spent around the fire with a glass of red and plenty of storytelling.

Days 9–11 – Longreach

Stay: Muddy Duck Tourist Park (Powered Sites)

Longreach is outback royalty — and we made the most of it.

🐎 Outback Pioneers Stagecoach Experience

We booked the 4-hour Cobb & Co Stagecoach Experience — and it was outstanding.

Highlights included:

  • A thrilling stagecoach ride (yes, it moves quickly!)

  • Historical storytelling about Australia’s frontier days

  • Authentic outback hospitality

  • Traditional bush tucker morning tea

It’s immersive, entertaining and gives you real insight into how tough early travel was in the Outback.

🌅 Smithy’s Drovers Sunset Cruise & Dinner

An absolute standout experience.

This Thomson River cruise begins in the late afternoon and floats gently into sunset. The reflections on the water as the sun drops behind the river gums are stunning.

After the cruise, dinner is served riverside under the stars — hearty camp oven fare, live entertainment and classic Aussie bush humour. It’s one of those evenings you don’t forget.

Day 12 – Bluff

Stay: Bluff Hotel

A classic country pub stop. The Bluff Hotel is an iconic small-town Queensland pub — cold drinks, solid pub meals and great conversation with locals.

Sometimes the simplest stops are the most memorable.

Days 13–14 – Agnes Water / 1770

Stay: The Summit 1770 (Kui Parks)

After the red dirt, arriving at the coast felt like a completely different holiday.

The Summit 1770 sits high on a hill with ocean views and beautiful breezes — a fantastic caravan-friendly park with space and privacy.

🐠 Lady Musgrave Island Reef Tour

Operator: 1770 Reef Tours

The perfect finale to an Outback adventure.

Departing from Seventeen Seventy, the full-day trip to Lady Musgrave Island takes you to the southern Great Barrier Reef lagoon.

The experience includes:

  • Snorkelling over coral gardens

  • Viewing turtles, reef fish and vibrant coral

  • Glass-bottom boat tours

  • Time on the sand cay itself

The clear blue water was the ultimate contrast to the dusty highways we’d travelled just days before.

Why We Love Couples Caravan Trips

Travelling with other couples in caravans gives you the perfect mix:

  • Shared meals and laughs

  • Your own space at the end of the day

  • Flexibility to explore at your own pace

  • A built-in convoy for those long Outback stretches

It’s comfortable, social and adventurous all at once.

Planning Your Own Outback Queensland Road Trip?

This loop from Brisbane through Cunnamulla, Quilpie, Eromanga, Longreach and back via the coast is an incredible mix of:

  • Artesian hot springs

  • Dinosaur discoveries

  • Outback river cruises

  • Station stays

  • Country pubs

  • Great Barrier Reef snorkelling

And it’s all caravan-friendly.

If you’re thinking about your own Outback escape, this route is hard to beat.
